Trauma Therapy
Trauma has been talked about more and more lately. We hear about it everywhere. It’s depicted in shows and movies, discussed on podcasts, written about, and more… However, experiencing it yourself is a completely different story. Let’s set the record straight since there can often be some misinformation and misunderstanding surrounding the topic. What exactly is Trauma and how can we treat it?
Trauma results from an event, series of events, or set of circumstances that is experienced by an individual as physically or emotionally harmful or life-threatening, and has adverse effects on the individual’s functioning. Trauma can significantly disrupt a person’s overall wellbeing and the way they relate to themselves, others, and the world around them. Trauma overrides our ability to cope. The same traumatic event can impact each person differently. So, no matter your reaction, your experience and pain are valid. No matter the type of trauma or how long it’s been since the traumatic event, everyone can benefit from Trauma Therapy.
What Is Trauma Therapy?
Trauma Therapy at CTSA is focused on client empowerment, informed choice, collaboration, establishing safety, and transparent communication. These components are vital to Trauma Therapy because a traumatic event often leaves a person feeling powerless, unsafe in the world, and on high alert. Our therapists are highly skilled and trained to walk you through the process of Trauma Therapy slowly and carefully, all while maintaining a safe, communicative, and predictable environment.
In Trauma Therapy at CTSA, your therapist will help you return to the level of functioning you had prior to the trauma, and help you work towards post-traumatic growth. This is done, as always, by re-establishing the mind-body connection since this is usually the first thing that is disrupted following a traumatic event. Because of our integrative model, we often refer our clients to Yoga Therapy, meditation, and other body-based (or somatic) treatments to support Trauma Therapy in our Get Centered Wellness Studio [include hyperlink].
A number of our Mental Health Therapists have advanced training and certification in treating trauma, and specialize in Trauma Therapy. Clients are carefully matched with Trauma Therapists who specialize in their particular type of trauma and offer trauma-informed, evidence-based treatment. Examples of Trauma Therapy we offer include: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and more.
